Report From the Field: A Wallenberg Student Shares His Journey in Germany
- Heidelberg at dusk.
- The Documentation and Cultural Center for German Sinti and Roma. This building contains a Holocaust museum, a research center, and the Zentralrat Deutscher Sinti und Roma, the advocacy and political affiliate of the Cultural Center.
- The Holy Ghost Cathedral is not far from where Stuart works. It’s a popular tourist destination for “out-of-towners”, so he usually takes advantage of the cheap delis in the area.
- A memorial in the Altstadt (Old City). It marks the location of a synagogue that was destroyed during Kristallnacht. The monument at the memorial reads: “At this place stood the Heidelberg Synagogue, which was destroyed by sinful hands on November 10, 1938.”
Stuart Richardson is a dual-concentrator in German and International Studies and a member of the LSA Honors Program, the Residential College, and the Barger Leadership Institute.
As a recipient of a 2014 Wallenberg Summer Travel Award, Stuart is in Heidelberg, Germany with an internship at the Documentations- und Kulturzentrum deutscher Sinti und Roma where he is helping the Kulturzentrum develop an educational program concerning the Roma Holocaust for English speakers.
